Tips For How To Make A Career Transition

Did you know that we spend ⅓ of our lives working? That is roughly whooping 90,000 hours, which is crazy! The reality is that dissatisfaction in jobs is very common. Don’t be discouraged, it is all about taking the necessary steps towards reaching a career you desire! So let Resubae guide you on the right path.

Why do people make the transition?

There are a variety of reasons why people feel the need to change their careers. Reasons include better salary, stress, better work-life balance, new challenges or lack of passion.

We put on our own lab coats and found that growth opportunities and company culture were two other reasons. So if any of these sound like something you’re going through, then YOU need to make that transition!

Without further ado, let’s explore 10 steps you can do today to ensure you’re career transition is as smooth as silk

Step 1: Evaluate your current job satisfaction

To check if you need to make a transition, evaluate how you are feeling in your current job, company and industry. Note these feelings down if it helps. If a negative pattern keeps recurring then you know it’s time to make a change!

Step 2: Tickets for the self-discovery express

Unlike other methods of transportation, the train of self-discovery is completely free. On this journey, you will travel past various stations such as your interest, values and skills. Do spend time exploring each because they will help you set up for a successful career ahead.

Take a trip down memory lane and review past successful roles, volunteer work, projects or jobs that you have done. Identify whether these positions consisted of activities and skills you enjoyed implementing. Put a spotlight on your core values and skills and ask yourself whether they are present in your current career. If the answer is no, then stay on board the Career transition express!

Step 3: “Join the dark side, we have cookies”

Okay, we are not asking you to join the dark side of the force although cookies do sound great! That is not the point, however. Step 3 is all about considering alternative careers. This is the stage where you brainstorm ideas for career alternatives. Do extensive research as well about possible career options.

Step 4: Check out job options

After doing some extensive research it is time to see what is currently available on the market. Through your research, you have identified several jobs, companies and industries. This is where you can compare and contrast, carry out an evaluation of each job, company and industry. All the information you need is only one click away!

Step 5: Time to network

Networking is a powerful tool you have at your disposal so make sure you connect to all the relevant people. The more, the merrier and if you need a reason to be convinced, roughly 70% of jobs are filled through networking.

When you have a job, company or industry in mind, reach out to personal contacts who are working in that industry. Better yet, contact people working at the company or who are in the industry. Ask them for information about what it is like!

Step 6: Become someone’s shadow

Shadowing is a great method to get hands-on experience! Express your interest in the company and that you would love to see what a particular role is like. Shadowing people will give you a clearer idea of whether the job sounds as good in real life as it does on paper.

Step 7: Build up that experience

If you want more hands-on experience you can also consider the idea of volunteering, internships or freelance. This will help you understand whether a position, company or industry is the right fit for you. Plus any experience will look good on your CV!

Step 8: Knowledge is power…

If you’re not a big fan of going back to school, then don’t worry we are not going to scare you with that idea. We are talking about taking classes that are relevant in the position or industry you want to get into. So if you are interested in graphic design but don’t have the background, you can take extra classes that will build up your skillset. A top tip we are shooting down your way is to ask your target field for suggestions.

Step 9: Upgrade your skills

While learning new skills are great, don’t forget to polish your existing ones. Explore ways in your current job where you could develop a new skill. If your company offers their own unique in-house training, sign up for as many classes as possible. You don’t need to go back to school for this one!

Step 10: “Same same but different but still same”

Sometimes it is not the actual job that may not be a right fit but rather the company itself. As mentioned, company culture is one of the reasons we have discovered why people are not happy in their current jobs. You already have industry knowledge so all you have to do now is find the right fit. Like the dating world, get yourself out there and explore the opportunities!

Making a sudden career transition is a big decision. So you must spend time analyzing this decision. After all, this could affect the next 40 years of your life. Make sure that all your efforts lead to you doing something you love doing every day!
